What is a lockdown alert system?
“A lockdown alert system is designed to help organisations communicate clear emergency instructions during a range of incidents. While these systems are commonly used to instruct people to stay inside, secure the building and await further instruction in response to an external threat, they can also be used to encourage evacuation where leaving the premises is the safest course of action. Why are they becoming such a key part of modern life-safety strategies?
“Because not all emergencies are fire related. Increasingly, organisations need to respond to situations where evacuation could actually increase risk. Incidents involving intruders, external threats or wider security concerns often require people to remain inside. Equally, other incidents may require a rapid evacuation.
In both cases, the ability to communicate instructions quickly and consistently across an entire site is absolutely critical. In the current climate, life-safety strategies should always account for both scenarios – evacuation and lockdown – to ensure people know exactly how they should respond.“
How is Martyn’s Law influencing demand for lockdown alert systems?
“The introduction of Martyn’s Law in the UK is definitely driving change. There’s a greater emphasis now on preparedness, risk assessment and the ability to respond effectively to a wide range of threats. While the legislation doesn’t mandate specific systems, it does require organisations to demonstrate that they can communicate clearly and act quickly in emergency situations. With the Act expected to come into force in 2027, any publicly accessible premises expecting 200 or more people to be present will need to have appropriate public protection procedures in place. As a result, integrating lockdown alert functionality into existing life-safety systems is becoming a logical and effective way for many organisations to meet those requirements.“
